GM Employees Take Initiative to Help out Hurricane-Struck Puerto Rico and Texas

OKEMOS, Mich.,–– Our social responsibility to our country is to help those in need when crisis strikes. For better or for worse, we are supposed to stick together. GM employees did just that when Texas and Puerto Rico were struck with a major disaster just over a month ago. Any little bit of help makes an impact during a considerable and difficult time for many families. Relief was sent when GM employees took initiative to help out hurricane-struck Puerto Rico and Texas.

Donations were made by hundreds of GM employees to Puerto Rico that amounted to 12 tons of goods. These items included solar cellphone chargers and lights, batteries, canned foods, baby formula, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and bottled water. 25 employees gathered together saws, hammers, tape, and other necessary supplies to help repair the homes of families struck by Hurricane Maria.

“There were so many people involved in this project,” said NASCAR Program Manager Alba Colon, who is from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. “It would be impossible to recognize everyone, but we would not have done this without all those involved in planning, leads from every area, managers, supervisors, teamGM Cares and employees from facilities, docks and truck drivers. Everyone had an important role in making this happen.”

Many employees collected trailers full of goods and delivered them to various nonprofit organizations that were along the impacted areas in Texas. On top of all that, there were 30 employees who helped clean up the debris from homes of hurricane victims. They also began to start rebuilding these homes as an initiative from the Habitat Hammers Back campaign launch.

The incredible work that these employees have done to make a difference in the lives of those affected by Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Harvey has been tremendous. Uniting as a company and as a country is a testament in itself. A special thank you to the GM employees that took initiative to help out hurricane-struck Puerto Rico and Texas!
