Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

OKEMOS, Mich., – While trick-or-treating is the most fun part of Halloween for kids, it can be one of the most stressful parts of the holiday for parents. According to the National Safety Council, children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Before you and your family set out to explore the neighborhood this year, make sure to go over these Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters with your kids to ensure that they have a fun and safe holiday.

Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

  • Wear Comfy Shoes: If you're planning to be out and about for a long time, you'll want to make sure everyone wears comfy shoes to avoid any soreness or blisters!
  • Plan a Route Before You Go: Planning your route in advance will help you to keep track of where you are and where you're going so that you don't get lost.
  • Accompany Your Kids: The best way to ensure the safety of your kids is to go trick-or-treating with them! You can teach them how to responsibly cross the street and help them avoid running into any trouble this Halloween. Plus, you may be able to get some candy for yourself!
  • Agree on a Return Time: If your older trick-or-treaters want to go on their own, make sure they have a cell phone in case of emergencies and agree on a time when they'll head home. That way, they can enjoy their independence and you can rest easy knowing they'll return at a specific time.
  • Use Reflective Tape: Before you go out, purchase a roll of reflective tape and apply it to your costume and your little monsters' costumes. The reflective tape will make them stand out in the darkness and help drivers spot them as you cross the road.
  • Bring a Flashlight: Sometimes, Michigan weather is unpredictable and it can become dark in the blink of an eye. Bring a flashlight and a fresh pair of batteries to give yourself some extra visibility while you're trick-or-treating!
  • Eat Before You Leave: Walking around on an empty stomach can turn an otherwise fun holiday into a Halloween nightmare very quickly. Cook a few scary good Halloween dishes to fill your trick-or-treaters' stomachs before they take to the streets!
  • Never Cut Across Yards: Cutting across someone else's yard is impolite and people might yell at you from your home. You wouldn't want anyone to cut across your yard on Halloween, would you? It's better to be safe than sorry.
  • Charge Your Phone: This may be common sense, but getting an extra charge in before you leave can make a huge difference in the event of an emergency. Don't hesitate to be over-prepared for any situation!
  • Stay in a Group: There's safety in numbers. Going in a group with friends or family will help vehicles on the road easily spot you and reduce the chances of vehicle-related accidents.
  • Watch Out for Drivers: It's impossible to predict the behavior of other drivers, but remaining cautious is extremely important, especially on a busy day like Halloween. If you notice someone backing out of their parking lot, direct your kids to stay back and allow them to leave their driveway. Make sure your trick-or-treaters don't run out in the streets, either!
  • Avoid Wearing Masks: Masks can obstruct your vision and can make breathing difficult for younger children. Instead, try painting a mask on using non-toxic face paint to give your kids the look they're going for!
  • Don't Go Inside Houses: Make sure your kids know not to trick-or-treat at any houses that don't have lights on or houses that invite them in. Remind your kids to leave right away if people tell them to come in.
  • Check Your Candy: Before your kids start feasting on their new candy, go through their bag and check the candy they've acquired. If you notice anything that isn't wrapped or any candy that looks abnormal, get rid of it right away. (Tip: if you see anything you want, make sure to take that as well!)

Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween is one of the busiest and potentially dangerous times of the year. Use these Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters to teach your children important safety habits before they take to the streets on October 31st. At Graff Okemos, we realize that safety on the road is just as important as it is on foot. If you have a new driver in your home and want to help them maximize their safety on the road, you can use Chevrolet's Teen Driver Technology to teach them important driving habits as they get started! Additionally, you can protect your vehicle with Chevrolet's GAP coverage or any of our other protection plans to help keep your investment safe in the event of an accident. If you have any questions about financing, protection plans, or safety on the road, contact us and let us know! We are more than happy to help answer any questions you may have.

Chevrolet Becomes A Pioneer of Female Designers

OKEMOS, Mich.,–– Defying the old stereotype of a male-dominated car industry, Chevrolet has become a pioneer of female designers. Mara Kapsis, a Color and Trim Designer working for Chevrolet, has used her unique perspective to provide innovations to the interior and exterior of the Chevy Equinox. With her attention to detail and focus on lifestyle-based design, she has helped the 2018 Equinox become Chevrolet's second-best selling vehicle (behind the Silverado).

Chevrolet Becomes a Pioneer of Female Designers

Mara Kapsis' work has provided the Equinox with an updated, easy-to-clean denim-like interior, a wide variety of bold exterior color choices, and several sleek and stylish trim levels. Paying close attention to fashion trends, lifestyles, and product design has allowed Kapsis to directly appeal to the needs of Chevrolet's customers with practical solutions to everyday problems.

“By following real people [on Instagram and other social platforms] and absorbing the little things in life that help or hinder them - such as photos posted of muddy paws, spilled drinks or stains on the seats - we learned more about how we could make the new Equinox easier to live with and enjoy every day.” - Mara Kapsis

Chevrolet Becomes a Pioneer of Female Designers

Kapsis' updated design of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox's interior was created to solve a common consumer problem based on her observations of customers on social media. People frequently complained about the little things that hindered their lives - like stains, spills, and scuffs in their vehicles. With this in mind, Kapsis' redesigned the Chevy Equinox's interior with intricate and durable material on its seats, floor, and dashboard to make it stain resistant. The treatments on the fabric allow customers to rest easy knowing that their vehicles will hold up against just about anything while looking as good as the day they bought it!

Mara Kapsis' lifestyle-first design of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has set it apart from the competition with its focus on improving the lives of its customers. The Scariest Car Issues You'll Want to Avoid this Halloween

OKEMOS, Mich.,–– There's nothing scarier than having your car break down out on the road. Repair costs, towing expenses, and having to pay for a rental car can be a nightmare for your wallet. With proper vehicle care and routine maintenance, however, you can keep your vehicle and your bank account safe from a potential scare this October. Make sure you know what to do if you encounter any of the scariest car issues you'll want to avoid this Halloween. Following our advice will prevent your trick-or-treating from taking a turn for the worse!

Dead Battery

The Scariest Car Issues You'll Want to Avoid this Halloween

Problem: Your vehicle won't start! If you don't hear any noise when you start up your vehicle, it could mean that your battery is out of energy and may need to be jumpstarted back to life. (Think Frankenstein's monster, but in battery form.)

Solution: If you're having difficulty getting your vehicle going, phone a friend or ask a nearby driver to help you jumpstart your vehicle. Follow these steps to avoid the scary experience of a dead battery:

  1. Get the other vehicle as close to yours as possible (front to front) and put both vehicles in park. Shut them off and set the parking brakes.
  2. Next, open both vehicle's hoods and locate the batteries in each car. Make sure to identify the positive and negative terminals (typically, red means +, and black means - ).
  3. Using a pair of jumper cables, attach your red, positive clamp to the positive terminal to the vehicle with the good battery. After that, attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  4. Next, attach the black, negative clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery. After that, attach the remaining black clamp to an unpainted metal part of your vehicle away from the battery  (this is extremely important, and ensure a safe jump.)
  5. Start the vehicle with the working battery and let it run for a couple minutes. After that, start the car with the dead battery and allow it to run.
  6. Remove the cables in reverse order (negatives first, positive after) and thank the person that helped you. Congrats! You've restarted your battery!

Preventative Measures: If your vehicle is having difficulty starting itself, bring it into our Service Center! We can test the strength of your battery to determine whether or not it needs replacing so you can get back to trick-or-treating in no time!

Brake Wear

The Scariest Car Issues You'll Want to Avoid this Halloween

Problem: If you can hear screeching, squealing, or grinding when you try to slow down your vehicle, it isn't a monster - it's your brakes! Over time, your brake pads wear down through to the metal caliper and cause it to make contact with the disc/rotor. This metal on metal contact will cause grinding to occur and do serious damage to your brake system.

Solution: If you experience any of these symptoms, don't be scared! You may need to have your brakes repaired or your brake pads replaced. Have our service team inspect your brakes to determine whether or not they require maintenance, then take advantage of our brake specials to receive a discount with your next service!

Preventative Measures: Follow our 5 tips to increase the life of your brakes to ensure that these integral safety components are kept intact throughout the year.

Low Oil Level

The Scariest Car Issues You'll Want to Avoid this Halloween

Problem: If your vehicle's "check engine" light illuminates, or if your engine is much louder than normal, it could mean that your oil needs to be replaced. Since your engine's oil is used to lubricate and cool your engine, a low oil level can cause your engine's components to grind and push against one another, creating friction, increasing the heat in your engine. This can cause it to overheat and can create serious problems and warping in your engine!

Solution: Typically, you should have your oil changed every 3,000-5,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so. Having your oil regularly serviced will prevent damage to your vehicle and save you from the nightmares of overheating!

Preventative Measures: If you aren't sure when you last changed your oil, check it from home to determine whether or not you need an oil replacement. You can also keep a service log to maintain a record of services performed on your vehicle. That way, you'll be able to estimate when you need an oil change!

Overheating Engine

The Scariest Car Issues You'll Want to Avoid this Halloween

Problem: If you notice smoke coming from your engine or if this symbol appears on your dashboard, pull over immediately. Your engine is overheating!

Solution: If your engine overheats, fear not! At Graff Okemos, we offer free pickup and delivery. Give us a call and we'll pick you up right away to get you and your vehicle to safety. We're here to help you avoid any unnecessary scares this Halloween.

Preventative Measures: An overheating engine can be caused by a variety of factors. The most common, however, are low coolant and low oil levels. You should have your coolant replaced every 30,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so. Not sure when you last had it looked at? You can check it at home with these three simple steps:

  1. After turning off your car, pop your engine's hood.
  2. Locate your coolant reservoir. Typically, your coolant reservoir is located on the right side of your engine, but if you aren't sure what it looks like, look for the "coolant" or "antifreeze" labels on the cap of the large plastic container.
  3. Using the dotted lines on the side of the reservoir, you can determine whether or not you need to replace your coolant by the "FULL" and "EMPTY" indicators.

Dead Headlight or Taillight

The Scariest Car Issues You'll Want to Avoid this Halloween

Problem: If you're having difficulty seeing at night while driving, your headlights may need to be replaced. Without properly working headlights, you may encounter reduced or obstructed vision, making the road an unsafe and scary place for you and other trick-or-treaters.

Solution: When dawn breaks again, make your way to our Graff Okemos Service Center. We'll inspect and service your lights right away to ensure that you're able to take on the night once again. Whether you're vampire hunting or just enjoying a night out, make sure your lights are in good working condition this October to keep you and all the trick-or-treaters safe!

Preventative Measures: Luckily, your vehicle has built-in measures to remind you when it requires replacement lights. Besides the reduced visibility on the road, you may notice that your turn signals blink at a much faster rate than normal. This a signal to indicate that you'll need to have your turn signal light replaced as soon as possible! We can also check your lights for you at our Service Center and answer any questions you may have about them.

You might be in store for a scare or two this Halloween, but they certainly shouldn't have to do with your vehicle. Use our preventative measures and tips to fight off the scariest car issues you'll want to avoid this Halloween. While you're at it, take advantage of our Fall Car Care guide to ensure your vehicle can take on the changing temperatures. If you happen to run into a scare this Halloween, call us and schedule service to take on the new weather. Plus, you can utilize our coupons to save some money that you can spend on cool costumes or unique decorations. Enjoy Halloween this year and avoid the scares of a breakdown while you're on the road!
