Why does Santa Claus wear a red suit? Before he donned the famous red suit, originally introduced in paintings and, famously, Coca-Cola advertisements, Santa Claus wore a green suit. It's hard to imagine the jolly fellow wearing anything other than red, but, hey, he looks good in green, too!Washington Irivng, a famous author, also helped develop the image of Santa Claus we know so well today. In his book, A History of New York, from 1809, Iriving portrayed Santa Claus as a large, bearded man who smokes a pipe. This book also introduced the idea of Santa Claus coming down the chimney to deliver gifts.
