Cheap Eats for Every College Student Going Back to School

OKEMOS, Mich.– School is out for the summer, but if you’re a college student then you know how brief that little vacation from history lectures and English papers and studying and math tests– we’ll stop listing all of the things that give you anxiety now– can be. Don’t worry– those are things you can adjust to, get back in the groove with.

But what about all of the other things you literally need to survive while living in a dorm room for 8 or 9 months out of the year with $20 to your name? You know, things like food. We can’t ace your biology test for you, but we can help you save money and keep your stomach from growling in class with these cheap eats for every college student heading back to school:
Elbow macaroni, rotini, farfalle, spaghetti– the range of pastas you have to choose from is endless in every direction. Now, what you decide to do with that pasta is what gives you creative power. Try mixing in butter and salt, or add your favorite pasta sauce. Ever had tuna mixed with macaroni? That's a good one, too. The possibilities are endless, as are the carbohydrates, which also make pasta the perfect meal for you college athletes out there!

Cheap Eats for Every College Student Going Back to School

The dog is quite possibly the most fun of the cheap eats due to its blank-slate appearance. What we mean is you can add whatever toppings you like because chances are they’ll all taste great on a hot dog. Plus, you can get an 8-pack of weenies for super cheap, and a bag of hot dog buns is probably less.

Cheap Eats for Every College Student Going Back to School

We love eggs, and so should you. Why? Because, just like pasta and hot dogs, there is a number of ways to eat them– scrambled, fried, hardboiled, poached. Some daredevils even consume them raw, blended into a smoothie, but we’re not condoning that.
Cheap Eats for Every College Student Going Back to School

Right now you’re thinking about how plain and unsatisfying a bowl of rice would be after a long day of classes. But, again, it’s time to expand your mind and let the creative juices start flowing. First of all, a bag of rice will last you a seriously long time. Secondly, you can turn rice into a pretty spectacular meal. For something simple, try adding garlic powder or salt to white rice. For a little zest, go with Spanish rice. If your pallet demands a more complicated concoction of flavors, a bag of fried rice is cheap and also provides you some extra nutritional value from the veggies it contains.
Cheap Eats for Every College Student Going Back to School

Of course we had to include the most classic of the classic cheap eats for college students going back to school. While most college students can eat an entire pizza to themselves, if you’re frugal you can make a pizza last multiple days. And you know how versatile pizza can be, not just with what toppings you put on it, but also in regards to when you eat it, whether its breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a snack. And don’t be ashamed, Morning Pizza Eaters– we’ve all had a slice for breakfast at some point.

Hopefully these cheap eats for every college student heading back to school show that just because you’re digging for quarters in the couch that doesn’t mean you can’t eat semi-well. Of course, you’ll probably want to save those quarters to eventually buy a big bag of salad, but until then you can at least get by with these meals. Do you have any other cheap meal ideas for college students? Share them with us by commenting below! 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax Diesel Pickup

All-New 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax Diesel Pickup
© General Motors

OKEMOS, Mich.– If you have a thing for Chevy trucks, you’re about to fall head over heals for a new update to the Colorado, Chevy's fastest-selling midsize pickup. Say hello to the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax diesel pickup.

This Colorado on steroids generates 369 pounds per foot of torque with its 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine, and can tow up to 7,700 pounds. As the purest diesel truck engine ever from General Motors, the Duramax is also expected to achieve better fuel economy than the traditional gasoline-run Colorado, which already leads the midsize segment in fuel economy.

The Duramax diesel engine is the midsize truck’s coolest trait. As one of GM’s turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines, the Duramax diesel engine packs value, capability, efficiency and power with a variable-geometry turbocharger. The engine’s power is SAE-certified at 181 horsepower and thanks to its broad torque creates tons of power at low rpm.

Some other features that make the Duramax stand out include:

  • Iron cylinder block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head
  • Forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods
  • Oiling circuit that lets the turbocharger give higher pressure at the turbo and quick oil delivery
  • Piston-cooling oil jets
  • 16.5:1 compression ratio
  • Common rail direct injection fuel system
  • Ceramic glow plugs that heat quicker and at higher temperatures
  • Balance shaft that makes for a smooth drive and drives the oil pump
  • Laminated steel oil pan with an upper aluminum section that strengthens and quiets the engine
  • B20 bio-diesel capability

One of the most important aspects of the Duramax is how successful it has been in meeting some of the most demanding U.S. emissions standards because of its cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The cooled EGR helps lower emissions through redirection of exhaust that is blended into the fresh intake air stream, which is pulled into the cylinder head for combustion. This lowers combustion temperatures and rates, and cuts down on the production of NOx.

While the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax diesel pickup creates new benchmarks in efficiency and capability for its segment, it’s also another way Chevy is expanding its lineup to give customers more options, according to Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing.

The 2016 Colorado Duramax will be at dealerships this fall in the LT and Z71 Crew Cab models, and will be $3,730 more than a 3.6L V6 model with equivalent features. We can’t wait to show off how clean and efficient this Colorado is next to the New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks at our Chevy dealership serving East Lansing, MI!

Pre-Order the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in August

Pre-Order the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in August
© General Motors

OKEMOS, Mich.– As the latter half of 2015 kicks in, major automakers are coming forward with their latest and greatest for the next model year, and there’s no doubt car enthusiasts are anticipating production of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

According to an inside source from Chevy, you may be able to pre-order the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in August, specifically August 13, a much earlier release date than you may have expected. The news comes as a surprise to many seeing as Chevy neglected to give even a ballpark release date when it officially unveiled the sixth generation Camaro back in May.

First released in 1966, the Camaro has not been so neck-and-neck with the Ford Mustang as many enthusiasts claim. In fact, you might say the Camaro has outdone its pony car competitor in regards to design, technology and, most of all, performance

Sure, that’s a pretty strident claim, but you don’t need to hear it from the experts to believe it– the consumers’ wallets do all the talking. Since 2010 the Camaro has outsold the Mustang and proven its preeminence as a pony car, which brings us back to all of the commotion that you could potentially pre-order the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro this August.

It’s definitely worth noting that General Motors has in no way endorsed this rumor, not even releasing a subtle hint that might serve as validation. However, when information like this hits the streets it’s typically on target, especially seeing as no one from Chevy has denied the claims.

If anything, this gives you a heads up that your favorite pony car could be ready for you in just a few weeks. If the new Camaro gets you excited, you should see how excited we get about any New Chevy Cars or New Chevy Trucks when they arrive at our Haslett area Chevy dealer.. When the new Camaro finally does comes in, do yourself a favor come take it on a test drive!

Chevy Makes Room for New 2017 Crossover

© General Motors

OKEMOS, Mich.– When it comes to choosing your next Chevrolet crossover, you currently have three options: the Trax, Chevy’s smallest crossover; the Equinox, their crossover the next size up; and the Traverse, their largest crossover. Despite the range these options give consumers, Chevy will make room for a new 2017 crossover that will fit between a downsized 2017 Equinox and the 2017 Traverse.

By downsizing the Equinox and adding a new crossover to take its place, Chevy will successfully cover all of its bases in the crossover category, giving consumers the ultimate menu of vehicles options.

When Chevy makes room for a new 2017 crossover, they will also have a strong hand to compete against other automotive manufacturers that already have a wider range of crossover options, such as Nissan, and will give them a leg up on competitors like Ford, Honda and Jeep.

As of right now, there’s no indication that Chevy has a name or design ready for the crossover slated to squeeze between the Equinox and Traverse, but considering the automaker’s stable history with design and performance, we’re confident it will produce a crossover worthy of your attention.

The new 2017 crossover would also be a boon to other General Motors automakers, serving as the foundation for the Cadillac XT5, which will succeed the SRX next spring, and the next generation GMC Acadia, also planed to downsize to a three-row midsize in 2016.

Creating a slot between the Equinox will give Chevy two 2-row and two 3-row crossovers, making the automaker a powerhouse in that segment. Hopefully you’re as excited as we are to see what Chevy comes up with! Until then, feel free to check out the New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks at our Holt Area Chevy dealer.

Performance and Design Updates for the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Performance and Design Updates for the 2016 Silverado 1500
© General Motors

OKEMOS, Mich.– Chevrolet has a lasting reputation for strong design and performance, and the automaker won’t let you down with the performance and design updates for the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Chevy pickup sales are up 32 percent midway through the year, and notable updates in design, performance and technology for the 2016 Silverado will help propel sales. As with the redesigned 2016 Camaro and 2016 Malibu, you can expect the 2016 Silverado to stand out.

You may have noticed a trend of Chevy implementing significant updates to the Silverado 1500 each model year. According to Chevy, this is part of a plan to bolster Chevy Trucks’ momentum, and performance and design updates for the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 include:

  • A redesigned, muscular body that seems to be less boxy and is especially noticeable in the front end of the pickup
  • Expanded use of the Silverado’s 8-speed transmission
  • New safety technologies
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability

Chevy’s strategy to continue redesigning and updating the Silverado is panning out as well or better than the automaker expected. It says since the launch of the all-new Silverado 1500 in 2013 the pickup’s sales have increased by double digits, reaching a 14.6 percent increase through June 2015.

As much as we would love to give you more details on the 2016 Silverado, Chevy will wait to release any more information. Seeing as these teasers have already piqued your interest, you can blame Chevy for temporarily withholding information to keep you on your toes in anticipation for a big reveal this fall.

If you can’t wait until fall to meet the 2016 Silverado, the 2015 Silverado, built with high strength steel, is just as dependable of a performer. Right now, you can double the value of your trade up to $4,000 and drive away with a New Chevy Truck– like the 2015 Silverado– or a New Chevy Car– like the 2015 Malibu– at an insane discount from our Dewitt area Chevrolet dealer!

2015 Chevy Silverado Bear and Aluminum Man Ads Tease Ford

2015 Chevy Silverado Ads Make Fun of Ford Aluminum Trucks
© Copyright General Motors
OKEMOS, Mich.– We’re all aware of the healthy rivalry that exists between Chevrolet and Ford, but sometimes it’s necessary to take things a step further and add a little sting to the lighthearted humor to really get to the core of what makes Chevy vehicles so different from their biggest competitor.

We want you to drive a reliable, strong vehicle that will safely get you where you need to be, and that’s why we’re laughing at the 2015 Chevy Silverado "bear" and "Aluminum Man" ads that tease Ford aluminum trucks. Because compared to the durable high strength steel Chevy still uses to manufacture its pickups, aluminum is more of a downgrade than an innovation from steel.

The ads, which appear online and have potential to become TV spots, are absolutely hilarious, and from start to finish they never cease poking fun at Ford’s aluminum design.

One spot features a group of comic book fanatics criticizing a satirical superhero, Almighty Aluminum Man, for not being strong enough due to his aluminum make. It's meant to be a comical analogy of Ford’s aluminum truck, hinting at the weakness of aluminum.

Another spot features a series of people in a materials testing facility where they’re asked to test the strength of two cages– one is aluminum and one is steel– before a 700-pound grizzly bear is released into the room. Of course, each of the participants chooses to take refuge in the steel cage because it's stronger than the aluminum cage, and then they’re shown a 2015 Chevy Silverado– also made of high strength steel.

These 2015 Chevy Silverado Bear and Aluminum Man Ads Tease Ford aluminum trucks and do a great job at making you laugh, but they also show the dependability and strength of Chevy’s vehicles, namely their trucks, which are still manufactured with high strength steel– not a weaker metal like aluminum!

Wouldn’t you feel safer in a vehicle made of steel rather than a lighter, more malleable metal? There’s a reason why we sell New Chevy Trucks and New Chevy Cars at our Haslett Area Chevrolet Dealer, instead of any other brand! Come see what makes Chevy so strong and dependable and take a Test Drive– unless you’d rather be put in a steel cage with a ferocious bear trying to get at you.

Chevrolet Active Phone Cooling Keeps Your Smartphone from Overheating

Chevrolet Active Phone Cooling Keeps Your Smartphone from Overheating

OKEMOS, Mich.– Do you ever have issues with your smartphone overheating? New Chevrolet Active Phone Cooling keeps your smartphone from overheating while you drive.

The new feature that will be available in the 2016 Impala, Volt and Cruze was discovered during testing of a smartphone wireless charging feature, which will also be available in 2016. Engineers discovered smartphones ceased charging or shut off when under extreme heat, especially after just a few minutes inside the car’s cabin where temperatures can rapidly increase on warm or hot days.

Most smartphones are designed with thermal protection features to protect battery life by shutting them down until they cool down, but Chevy engineers realized how inconvenient this could be for drivers. As usual, they put their innovative thinking caps on and decided Chevy drivers like yourself would find it beneficial to have smartphone cooling technology in your vehicle.

Chevrolet Active Phone Cooling keeps your smartphone from overheating by way of an air vent attached to your vehicle’s air conditioning and ventilation system. It directs cool air to the wireless charging bin where your smartphone sits, and only works when you turn on your HVAC system.

Chevy expects this Active Phone Cooling will work well with the other smartphone features they’ve been spending a great deal of time developing, such as accessing features and apps through the MyLink radio.

Considering how attached you are to your smartphone these days– don’t worry, we all are– it might do you some good to own a vehicle that helps you keep your device in tact and at a level of accessibility that you can’t afford to be without. In that case, we think it’s a smart idea for people to take a deeper look into the New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks that are coming out. Check out the inventory at our Lansing Area Chevrolet Dealer and see what we mean!

Why the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Should Win Your Attention

Why the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Should Win Your Attention

OKEMOS, Mich.– American’s love to argue for their loyalties to particular automakers, but there’s one vehicle that many on both sides of the debate consider untouchable: the Chevrolet Corvette.

When you consider the impressive design and performance the modern Corvette showcases, it makes sense why you would love it, but there’s also something to be said for why the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette should win your attention. Here’s a little history lesson in honor of Chevrolet’s first Corvette coming off the assembly line on June 30, 1953, in Flint, MI.

Chevrolet first debuted a concept model of the 1953 Corvette in January of that year at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City, which led to production a few months later in Flint. However, the idea for the Corvette began germinating in 1951 when Harley J. Earl, a General Motors designer, decided Chevrolet should manufacture a low-cost American sports car to compete with European greats like MG, Jaguar and Ferrari.

According to GM, “Corvette” was a namesake after a “trim, fleet naval vessel that performed heroic escort and patrol duties during World War II.” Despite a strong name, from the outset GM struggled to make a case for why the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette should win your attention.

Features such as a fiberglass body, six-cylinder engine, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, wraparound windshield, whitewall tires and detachable plastic curtains for windows were unable to sway car buyers. Even the 1953 Corvette’s ostentatious Polo White exterior and red interior– much different than the available 2016 Corvette Z06 colors today– weren’t enough to draw the world’s attention.

Why the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Should Win Your Attention

The 1953 Corvette’s technology– including a clock, cigarette lighter and red warning light indicating when the parking brake was applied– didn’t seem to make up for its average performance of 0 to 60 mph in 11 or 12 seconds, and neither did its price of $3,490.

By 1954, GM was ready to call it quits for the Corvette, despite Chevrolet beginning mass production of the car at a plant in St. Louis, MO. Then plans changed when Ford Motor Company debuted the two-seater Thunderbird, an obvious competitor that GM would essentially be giving up to by discontinuing production of the Corvette.

Instead of abandoning ship, GM pushed Chevrolet to improve the Corvette, and in 1955 they found a solution to popularize it: a V-8 engine. With more power and speed, the Corvette quickly became a pop culture icon and earned the name “America’s sports car”.

Today the Corvette’s popularity and cultural presence continues to grow, even serving as the pace car for the 2015 Indy 500. Needless to say, the Corvette has earned its spot in the hearts of Americans and could easily be the source of our passion for Chevy Cars and Chevy Trucks like those at our Okemos Chevy Dealership! Come see our inventory and you’ll understand what we mean.
