OKEMOS, Mich.– If you have a thing for Chevy trucks, you’re about to fall head over heals for a new update to the Colorado, Chevy's fastest-selling midsize pickup. Say hello to the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax diesel pickup.

This Colorado on steroids generates 369 pounds per foot of torque with its 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine, and can tow up to 7,700 pounds. As the purest diesel truck engine ever from General Motors, the Duramax is also expected to achieve better fuel economy than the traditional gasoline-run Colorado, which already leads the midsize segment in fuel economy.

The Duramax diesel engine is the midsize truck’s coolest trait. As one of GM’s turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines, the Duramax diesel engine packs value, capability, efficiency and power with a variable-geometry turbocharger. The engine’s power is SAE-certified at 181 horsepower and thanks to its broad torque creates tons of power at low rpm.

Some other features that make the Duramax stand out include:

  • Iron cylinder block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head
  • Forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods
  • Oiling circuit that lets the turbocharger give higher pressure at the turbo and quick oil delivery
  • Piston-cooling oil jets
  • 16.5:1 compression ratio
  • Common rail direct injection fuel system
  • Ceramic glow plugs that heat quicker and at higher temperatures
  • Balance shaft that makes for a smooth drive and drives the oil pump
  • Laminated steel oil pan with an upper aluminum section that strengthens and quiets the engine
  • B20 bio-diesel capability

One of the most important aspects of the Duramax is how successful it has been in meeting some of the most demanding U.S. emissions standards because of its cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The cooled EGR helps lower emissions through redirection of exhaust that is blended into the fresh intake air stream, which is pulled into the cylinder head for combustion. This lowers combustion temperatures and rates, and cuts down on the production of NOx.

While the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax diesel pickup creates new benchmarks in efficiency and capability for its segment, it’s also another way Chevy is expanding its lineup to give customers more options, according to Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing.

The 2016 Colorado Duramax will be at dealerships this fall in the LT and Z71 Crew Cab models, and will be $3,730 more than a 3.6L V6 model with equivalent features.
